ASX/200 Closed higher by 0.43%, Lifted by Information Technology
By the end of the trading session on 23 February 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.43% and settled at 7,643.60. Out of 11 sectors, 09 closed higher along with the ASX 200.
Information Technology and Consumer Discretionary sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.51% and 1.49% respectively in their index values. On the other hand, Utilities and A-REIT sector was the top-losing sector, losing 0.64% and 0.13% respectively in their index values.
Block Inc. (ASX: SQ2) and Weebit Nano Limited (ASX: WBT) were the top gainers, with 13.716% and 12.957% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Lifestyle Communities Limited (ASX: LIC) and Sayona Mining Limited (ASX: SYA) were the top losers, with 12.984% and 8.696% drop in share prices, respectively.
Jumbo Interactive, a significant player in the Lotto sector, witnessed a 9% surge in shares, reaching $17.49, following its announcement of an adjusted profit of $20.8 million for the six months ending December 31, surpassing expectations.
Brambles, a packaging company, revised its profit forecasts for the fiscal year 2024 and reported a 21% increase in its underlying interim profit to $US 664.7 million.
Woodside, operating in the mining and energy sector, maintained steady shares at $30.51. It recently finalized a $2.1 billion agreement to sell a 15% stake in its Scarborough LNG project to Japanese buyer JERA.
Natural gas prices continued to decline due to a mild winter and overproduction. Despite efforts by American shale producers to reduce output, the situation is complicated by oil companies producing gas as a byproduct, resulting in unexpected challenges.
Market indices displayed mixed performances: The Dow rose by 1.18%, the S&P 500 increased by 2.11%, and the NASDAQ surged by 2.96%.
Conversely, the Hang Seng experienced a decrease of -0.25%, while the FTSE 100 saw a modest rise of 0.29% today.
