Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed Higher by 0.03%, Lifted by Energy

By the end of trading session on 23 October 2025, benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed 0.03% higher at 9,032.80. Out of 11 sectors, 07 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Energy and Utilities were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 3.19% and 1.29% in their values. On the other hand, Information Technology and Consumer Staples were the top-losing sectors, losing 0.94% and 0.91% in their values.

Karoon Energy Limited (ASX: KAR) and Pilbara Minerals Limited (ASX: PLS) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 9.407% and 5.338% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Perpetual Limited (ASX: PPT) and Super Retail Group Limited (ASX: SUL) are the top-losing stocks, losing 4.314% and 3.965% in their stock prices.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (ASX: FMG) gained 2.4% to trade at $20.84 after reporting a record first-quarter iron ore shipment of 49.7 million tonnes, marking a 4% increase compared to the same period last year.
  • Insurance Australia Group Ltd (ASX: IAG) advanced 1.4% to $7.98 after raising its FY26 guidance on the back of its recently completed acquisition of RACQ Insurance.
  • Ainsworth Game Technology Ltd (ASX: AGI) surged 4% to $1.05 following confirmation of a partial takeover proposal from its second-largest shareholder, Kjerulf Ainsworth.
  • Super Retail Group Ltd (ASX: SUL) slipped 4% to $16.47, despite reporting 2.6% like-for-like sales growth and a 4.5% rise in total sales over the first 16 weeks of FY26.
  • Meanwhile, gold prices fell for the third consecutive session, moving closer to US $4,000 an ounce as investors grew wary that the recent rally had overheated.
  • On the global front, market sentiment showed mild improvement overnight. The Dow Jones Industrial Average eased 0.71%, the S&P 500 declined 0.53%, and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.93%. 
  • In contrast, Asian and European markets were slightly higher, with the Hang Seng Index up 0.63% and the FTSE 100 rising 0.36% at the time of writing.
