Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed Higher By 0.85%; Lifted by A-REIT

By the end of the trading session on 1 November 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.85% and settled at 6,838.30. Out of 11 sectors, 02 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

A-REIT and Healthcare Services sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.79% and 1.12% respectively in their index values. Utilities and Consumer Staples sectors were the top-declining sectors, gaining 0.20% and 0.20% respectively in their index values.

Chalice Mining Limited (ASX: CHN) and Paladin Energy Limited (ASX: PDN) were the top gainers, with 8.938% and 7.938% growth in share prices, respectively. New Hope Corporation Limited (ASX: NHC) and Bellevue Gold Limited (ASX: BGL) were the top losers, with 4.507% and 4.499% drop in share prices, respectively.

  • CoreLogic data revealed that in October, house prices continued to rise due to robust demand from migrants, foreign investors, and a constrained rental market.
  • The IMF's recommendation for the RBA to raise the cash rate to ensure a return to the target inflation rate by 2025 led bond traders to increase the likelihood of an interest rate hike to 67%, up from 59% on the previous Tuesday.
  • The Australian dollar remained at a subdued level, at US63.30¢, following a 1.5% decline in October, marking the third consecutive month of losses.
  • Oil prices rebounded after a previous session decline, with investors closely monitoring the Israel-Hamas conflict.
  • In the stock market, the Dow closed with a 0.38% increase, the S&P 500 saw a 0.65% rise, and the NASDAQ ended the day 0.48% higher.
  • The Hang Seng index gained 0.09%, while the FTSE 100 experienced a minor decline of -0.08% on the day.
