ASX/200 Closed Higher By 0.84%; Lifted by Utilities
By the end of the trading session on 19 December 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.84% and settled at 7,489.10. All 11 sectors closed higher along with the ASX 200.
Utilities and Consumer Discretionary sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.82% and 1.13% respectively in their index values.
Liontown Resources Limited (ASX: LTR) and Neuren Pharmacy Limited (ASX: NEU) were the top gainers, with 11.262% and 7.927% growth in share prices, respectively. Weebit Nano Limited (ASX: WBT) and Tabcorp Holdings Limited (ASX: TAH) were the top losers, with 5.631% and 4.973% drop in share prices, respectively.
Woodside Energy saw a 1.5% increase, and Santos gained 0.9% in Tuesday's market movements.
Various mining stocks, particularly in iron ore, gold, and lithium, experienced upward trends, fueled by optimism surrounding potential interest rate cuts and increased M&A activities in the resources sector.
Fortescue Metals and Rio Tinto shares approached record highs, defying the softer iron ore prices in Singapore. The benchmark January iron ore contract dipped 0.3% to $US132.15 per tonne.
Tuesday witnessed an uptick in oil prices, building on previous gains. Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi militants' attacks on ships in the Red Sea disrupted maritime trade, leading companies to reroute vessels.
The Dow closed flat, the S&P 500 saw a 0.45% increase, and the NASDAQ ended the day higher by 0.62%.
However, the Hang Seng experienced a decline of -0.61%, while the FTSE 100 registered a 0.50% increase in today's trading session.
