Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed Higher By 0.83%; Lifted by Energy

By the end of the trading session on 14 November 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.83% and settled at 7,006.70. Out of 11 sectors, 9 sectors closed higher along with the ASX 200.

Energy and Materials sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 2.54% and 1.46% respectively in their index values. Utilities and Telecommunication services sector was the top-declining sectors, losing 1.11% and 0.79% respectively in their index values.

ALS Limited (ASX: ALQ) and Life 360 Inc. (ASX: 360) were the top gainers, with 8.520% and 6.068% growth in share prices, respectively. Link Administration Holdings Limited (ASX: LNK) and National Australian Bank Limited (ASX: NAB) were the top losers, with 3.252% and 3.217% drop in share prices, respectively.

  • Origin Energy faced a significant decline, dropping 3.2% to $8.50, after AustralianSuper rejected a last-minute offer to join a takeover bid for the company, adding another twist to the ongoing takeover battle.
  • Iron ore futures recorded an increase on Tuesday, influenced by evaluations of stimulus measures in China's property sector, the leading consumer of iron ore. Additionally, a decrease in shipments contributed to the rise, although demand for steel remained weaker.
  • Oil prices witnessed an increase following the release of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) monthly report, which emphasized the tight global supply balances amid robust consumption.
  • In the stock market, the Dow closed with a 0.16% gain, while the S&P 500 experienced a slight decline of 0.08%, and the NASDAQ concluded with a 0.22% decrease.
  • The Hang Seng index showed a minor decrease of -0.06%, while the FTSE 100 displayed a positive trend, rising by 0.89% on the current day.
