Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed higher by 0.29%; Lifted by Information Technology

By the end of the trading session on 30 January 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.29% and settled at 7,600.20. Out of 11 sectors, 07 sectors closed higher along with the ASX 200.

Information Technology and A-REIT sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.91% and 1.17% respectively in their index values. On the other hand Industrials and Consumer Staples were the top-losing sectors, declining 0.34% and 0.30% respectively in their index values.

Megaport Limited (ASX: MP1) and Nickel Industries Limited (ASX: NIC) were the top gainers, with 27.607% and 20.833% growth in share prices, respectively. Netwealth Group Limited (ASX: NWL) and Coronado Global Resources Inc. (ASX: CRN) were the top losers, with 4.383% and 2.711% drop in share prices, respectively.

  • Copper miner Sandfire Resources saw a 3.8% increase, reaching $7.12, following its latest quarterly trading update that reported unaudited sales revenue of $217 million.
  • Megaport, the cloud connectivity provider, experienced a significant surge of 27.6% to $12.48 after announcing a 5% increase in revenue to $48.6 million in its latest quarterly trading update.
  • Indonesian producer Nickel Industries recorded a notable 20.8% rise to 72.5¢. Investors were rewarded with an increased dividend, and the company revealed an on-market share buyback valued at up to $151 million.
  • The oil market remained steady, awaiting a U.S. response to the recent deadly attack on American troops in Jordan. The outcome could potentially escalate tensions in a region crucial to global crude production.
  • The Dow closed with a modest gain of 0.16%, the S&P 500 slightly declined by 0.07%, and the NASDAQ ended lower by 0.36%. 
  • Meanwhile, the Hang Seng reported a decrease of -1.58%, and the FTSE 100 was down by -0.03% on the current trading day.
