By the end of the trading session on 22 August 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.09% and settled at 7,121.60. Out of 11 sectors, 06 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.
Information Technology and Telecommunications Services sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 5.06% and 2.00% respectively in their index values. Consumer Staples and Energy sectors were the top declining sectors, declining 2.54% and 0.93% respectively in their index values.
Altium Limited (ASX: ALU) and Megaport Limited (ASX: MP1) were the top gainers, with 25.921% and 16.939% growth in share prices, respectively. Imugene Limited (ASX: IMU) and Alumina Limited (ASX: AWC) were the top losers, with 8.000% and 7.985% drop in share prices, respectively.
BHP Group registered a 0.7% decline following weaker-than-expected dividends and profit outcomes.
The Australian sharemarket saw a positive upturn at the closing bell on Tuesday, driven by substantial gains in the information technology sector.
Coles Group faced a challenging situation as its full-year results were announced, causing its shares to drop by 5.8%. The results were marred by unexpected cost overruns in the six months up to June 30.
The crude oil market is under scrutiny as OPEC's production cuts tighten supply. Traders are also closely monitoring discussions about the resumption of Iraqi exports and China's weakening demand.
The Dow concluded with a decrease of 0.11%, while the S&P 500 posted an increase of 0.69%, and the NASDAQ recorded a notable rise of 1.56%.
In terms of global markets, the Hang Seng exhibited a gain of 1.52%, while the FTSE 100 experienced a slight decline of -0.06% on the same day.
