ASX 200 Closed Higher By 0.07%, Buoyed By IT and Energy Sectors
By the end of the trading session on 23 January 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.07% and settled at 7,457.30. Out of 11 sectors, 6 sectors closed higher along with the ASX 200.
The Information Technology and Energy sectors were the top 2 gaining sectors, gained 1.30% and 0.86% respectively in their index values. The Utilities and Health care sectors were the top 2 declining sectors, declined 0.50% and 0.17% respectively in their index values.
Karoon Energy Ltd (ASX: KAR) and Liontown Resources Limited (ASX: LTR) were the top gainers, with 7.407% and 6.909% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Corporation Limited (ASX: FPH) and Adbri Limited (ASX: ABC) were the top losers, with 2.838% and 2.718% drop in share prices, respectively.
S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.07% to 7,457.30 led by the Information Technology and Energy sectors by 1.40% and 0.86% respectively.
Oil prices declined today as traders looked-for more signals on an economic recovery in China and a potential U.S. recession.
Gold prices rose slightly and touched a nine-month high today as markets expected more U.S. data this week to gauge whether the world’s largest economy was facing a potential recession in 2023.
Most Asian currencies rose today, while the dollar weakened further amid predictions that the Chinese economy will bounce back this year, with the focus also turning to key U.S. data due this week.
Karoon Energy rose 7.41% after announcing an increase in reserves at its Santos Basin concession, BM-S-40, in Brazil.
Ramelius Resources Limited fell 0.921% after revealing that it had deferred the stage three open pit extension at its Edna May operations due to higher costs.
South32 Limited rose 1.312% after warning that the first half operating unit costs were expected to be in line or below FY23 guidance at most of its operations.
Dow has closed up by 1.00%, S&P 500 up by 1.89%, and NASDAQ ended higher by 2.66%.
The Hang Seng is up by 1.82%. and the FTSE 100 is up by 0.30%.
