Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed Higher By 0.06%; Lifted by Energy

By the end of the trading session on 11 December 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.06% and settled at 7,199.00. Out of 11 sectors, 07 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

Energy and Consumer Discretionary sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.19% and 0.62% respectively in their index values. Materials and Utilities sectors were the top-losing sectors, losing 0.70% and 0.54% respectively in their index values.

Credit Corp Group Limited (ASX: CCP) and Beach Energy Limited (ASX: BPT) were the top gainers, with 3.963% and 3.691% growth in share prices, respectively. The Star Entertainment Limited (ASX: SGR) and Bellueve Gold (ASX: BGL) were the top losers, with 8.654% and 7.714% drop in share prices, respectively.

  • Sigma Healthcare has agreed to merge with Chemist Warehouse, a move that will see the retail pharmacy brand listed on the ASX and create an $8.8 billion retail giant.
  • Kin Group has increased its buyout bid for Pact Group to 84¢ per share, up from the previous offer of 68¢ per share. This adjustment resulted in a 22.6% surge in shares, trading at the new bid price.
  • Whispir has confirmed ongoing discussions with Pendula regarding a potential takeover offer for its main operations. Despite the talks, Whispir's shares remained unchanged at 52¢.
  • After experiencing its longest weekly losing streak in five years, oil prices are stabilizing. This shift comes as indications suggest that the supply of oil is beginning to outpace demand.
  • Market updates reveal positive performance, with the Dow closing up by 0.36%, the S&P 500 up by 0.41%, and the NASDAQ ending higher by 0.45%. 
  • On the contrary, the Hang Seng is down by -1.68%, while the FTSE 100 shows a 0.54% increase today.
