ASX/200 Closed Higher By 0.03%; Lifted by A-REIT

By the end of the trading session on 18 August 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.03% and settled at 7,148.10. Out of 11 sectors, 06 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

A-REIT and Utilities sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.83% and 1.17% respectively in their index values. Telecommunications Services and Consumer Discretionary sectors were the top declining sectors, declining 1.69% and 1.00% respectively in their index values.

Magellan Financial Group Limited (ASX: MFG) and Abacus Group Limited (ASX: ABG) were the top gainers, with 13.260% and 10.185% growth in share prices, respectively. Imugene Limited (ASX: IMU) and Super Retail Group Limited (ASX: SUL) were the top losers, with 15.958% and 6.852% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Imugene recorded a significant decline of 16%, marking it as the poorest performing stock. This followed its recent activities involving a $35 million share placement and the launch of a $30 million share purchase plan.
  • Centuria Capital, a property fund manager, experienced a decrease of 5.9% in its stock value due to its FY24 guidance falling short of market expectations.
  • Asian stock markets faced a continued downward trend, marking the sixth consecutive day of decline. These declines were attributed to concerns about China's economic situation and rising interest rates.
  • The oil market witnessed its first weekly loss since June. This decline was driven by apprehensions surrounding China's economic weakness and potential tightening of monetary policy in the US. 
  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average (Dow) concluded with a decrease of 0.84%, while the S&P 500 experienced a decline of 0.77%. The NASDAQ Composite also saw a decline of 1.17%.
  • The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong faced a substantial decline of -1.67%, and the FTSE 100 index in the UK also experienced a decline of -0.63% on the current day.
