Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed Higher By 0.017%; Lifted by Utilities

By the end of the trading session on 24 November 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.17% and settled at 7,040.80. Out of 11 sectors, 04 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

Utilities and Energy sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.55% and 1.27% respectively in their index values. Information Technology and Telecommunications Services sector were the top-declining sectors, losing 1.71% and 0.51% respectively in their index values.

Paladin Energy Limited (ASX: PDN) and Genesis Minerals Limited (ASX: GMD) were the top gainers, with 2.475% and 2.416% growth in share prices, respectively. Virgin Money UK PLC (ASX: VUK) and Technology One Limited (ASX: TNE) were the top losers, with 6.082% and 4.883% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Select Harvest experienced a 0.9% decline as fiscal losses widened to $115 million in 2023, a significant increase from the $4.8 million reported the previous year. 
  • Origin Energy witnessed a 2.5% surge, leading to an upward movement in utility stocks. The company remains a focal point as AustralianSuper, a shareholder, criticized Brookfield's attempts to extend the timeline for its $18.7 billion bid.
  • Bruce McEwen, the Chief Executive of the distribution unit at Fletcher Building, resigned, with plans to depart in March 2024.
  • Oil prices declined due to internal discord within OPEC+, resulting in the postponement of a scheduled meeting. This move dampened speculations about additional production cuts by the Saudi-led alliance, coinciding with a notable increase in US stockpiles.
  • The Dow concluded with a 0.53% gain, the S&P 500 exhibited a 0.41% increase, and the NASDAQ recorded a 0.46% rise.
  • On the other hand, the Hang Seng experienced a -1.44% decline, while the FTSE 100 showed a 0.19% increase for the day.
