ASX 200 ended higher despite weak performance of most sectors
By the end of the day’s trade on 28 March 2022, ASAX 200 index moved up marginally by 0.084% and settled at 7412.4. Despite the gain in ASX 200, most sectors ended in the red zone. The materials and the financial sectors were the top gainers with 1.29% and 0.58%, respectively.
Most stocks on ASX were driven by the mixed cues from Wall Street on Friday 25 March 2022 and tighter monetary policy by the US Federal Reserve. Further, the worries related to the Russia-Ukraine war and sanctions imposed on Russia also influenced investor sentiment.
The information technology sector was the worst performer, with a 2.667% drop in the index value. The telecommunication services and A-REIT were the following two worst performers with more than 1.2% drop in the index values respectively.
On ASX 200, Washington H Soul Pattinson & Company Limited (ASX: SOL) and Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (ASX: URW) were the top gainers with 3.117% and 2.678% growth in their share prices, respectively.
On the other hand, Paladin Energy Ltd (ASX: PDN) and XERO LIMITED (ASX: XRO) were the top losers with a 6.025% and 5.162% drop in the share prices, respectively.
Amid the ongoing concern related to the Russia-Ukraine war, there is another fear amongst investors associated with the recent missile attack at the Amarco petroleum facility in Jeddah. Fresh doubts have emerged over the safety of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix post the explosion.
Oil prices were impacted due to the recent lockdown in Shanghai. The lockdown has hit the economic activity there.
The Hang Seng is up 1.12%, and the FTSE 100 is up 0.21% today.
NASDAQ-100 and NASDAQ Composite dropped marginally. Dow Industrial, S&P 500, and Russell 2000 settled in the green zone.
