ASX 200 Ended Lower; Dragged Down By Utilities and Industrials Sectors

By the end of the trading session on 16 June 2022, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.15% and settled at 6,591.10. Out of 11 sectors, 7 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

The A-REIT and Telecommunication Services sectors were the top 2 gaining sectors, gained 1.45% and 0.53% in their index values. On the other hand, the Utilities and Industrials sectors were the top 2 losing sectors, declined 1.56% and 1.24% in their index values.

Eagers Automotive Limited (ASX: APE) and Appen Limited (ASX: APX) were the top gainers with 5.442% and 5.098% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Link Administration Holdings Limited (ASX: LNK) and Inghams Group Limited (ASX: ING) were the top losers, with a 10.428% and 4.445% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • S&P/ASX 200 dropped marginally after lunchtime following the release of the May labor force report that showed 60,600 people found jobs in the month, more than the market expectations of employment growth of 25,000.
  • The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has provided an update on the unemployment rate. The Seasonally adjusted employment grew 0.5% in May 2022. This increase was the 7th consecutive surge in employment after the relaxation of lockdown restrictions in late 2021.
  • Eagers Automotive's share price gained after the company announced its intention to carry out on market share buyback.
  • Oil rose after falling almost 5% over the prior two sessions as investors weighed the outlook for supply and demand following a big interest-rate hike from the Federal Reserve and rising US crude output.
  • Dow has closed up by 1.0%, S&P 500 up by 1.5%, and NASDAQ closed higher by 2.5%.
  • Hang Seng is down by 1.53%, and FTSE 100 is up by 1.20%.
