ASX 200 Ended Lower By 1.21%; Consumer Staples Sector Dropped 3.80%

By the end of the trading session on 23 August 2022, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 1.21% and settled at 6,961.80. Out of 11 sectors, 9 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

The Energy and Utilities sectors were the top 2 gaining sectors, gained 1.30% and 0.23% in their index value. On the other hand, the Consumer Staples and Financial sectors were the top 2 losing sectors, declined 3.80% and 2.05% in their index values.

Altium Limited (ASX: ALU) and Ansell Limited (ASX: ANN) were the top gainers with 19.476% and 8.591% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Endeavour Group Limited (ASX: EDV) and Payments Limited (ASX: EML) were the top losers, with a 12.334% and 11.556% drop in share prices, respectively.

  • S&P/ASX 200 ended lower, tracked the U.S. market as rate fears reignited recession anxiety, and investors digested a slew of company earnings.
  • Altium Limited’s share price jumped more than 19% to $35.340 after the company reported a 57% increase in profit after tax while revenue grew 23% to $US220.8 million.
  • Ansell Limited’s shares were also traded higher after forecasting FY23 EPS of $US1.15 to $US1.35, from a result of $US1.252 in FY22, or $US1.386 on an adjusted basis.
  • Endeavour Group dropped sharply 12.334% despite reporting an 11.2% jump in profits, with solid trading continuing in the first seven weeks of this financial year.
  • The energy sector was one of the top performing sectors today as oil prices rose due to renewed concerns over tight supply dominated market sentiment after Saudi Arabia warned that the major oil producer could cut output to correct a recent oil price decline.
  • Dow has closed down 1.6%, S&P 500 down by 1.8%, and NASDAQ closed lower by 2.2%.
  • Hang Seng is down 1.33%, and FTSE 100 is down by 0.22%.
