ASX 200 Ended Lower 0.64%; Energy Sector Was The Biggest Laggard

By the end of the trading session on 20 June 2022, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.64% and settled at 6,433.40. Out of 11 sectors, 7 sectors closed higher despite the gain in the ASX 200.

The A-REIT and Consumer Discretionary were the top 2 gaining sectors, gained 3.62% and 2.77% in their index values. On the other hand, the Energy and Materials sectors were the top 2 losing sectors, declined 5.19% and 4.63% in their index values.

PointsBet Holdings Limited (ASX: PBH) and Appen Limited (ASX: APX) were the top gainers with 18.604% and 9.677% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Paladin Energy Limited (ASX: PDN) and Champion Iron Limited (ASX: CIA) were the top losers, with a 13.077% and 11.941% drop in share prices, respectively.

  • The S&P/ASX 200 was weighed down by heavy losses across the energy and materials sectors as commodity prices fell due to concerns about global growth. The materials sector had its worst session in around eight weeks.
  • Oil prices are lower as worries about slowing global economic growth, fuel demand, and uncertainty weighed on markets after numerous interest rate hikes around the world, which is causing the energy sector to fall.
  • The materials sector dropped sharply after Iron ore futures in China dropped in early trade as concerns mounted about an economic slowdown and its impact on steel demand.
  • Pointsbet Holdings’ share price gained after the company has secured a $94.16 million investment from SIG Sports Investment Corp.
  • Dow has closed down by 0.1%, S&P 500 up by 0.2%, and NASDAQ closed higher by 1.4%.
  • Hang Seng is up by 0.40%, and FTSE 100 is down by 0.41%.
