ASX 200 Ended Higher By 0.02%; Lifted By Energy Sector
By the end of the trading session on 19 August 2022, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.02% and settled at 7,114.50. Out of 11 sectors, 6 sectors closed higher along with the ASX 200.
The Energy and Materials sectors were the top 2 gaining sectors, gained 3.79% and 0.66% in their index value. On the other hand, the A-REIT and Healthcare sectors were the top 2 losing sectors, declined 1.37% and 0.94% in their index values.
Santos Limited (ASX: STO) and Whitehaven Coal Limited (ASX: WHC) were the top gainers with 6.364% and 6.204% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, TPG Telecom Limited (ASX: TPG) and Inghams Group Limited (ASX: ING) were the top losers, with a 12.387% and 9.428% drop in share prices, respectively.
S&P/ASX 200 moved little today as hawkish comments from the Federal Reserve weighed on risk appetite.
Coal miners Whitehaven, New Hope, and Yancoal have jumped again as Newcastle thermal coal futures prices increases due to rising demand as Europe scrambles to seek alternative coal suppliers to Russia.
Newcrest Mining Ltd, the country’s largest gold miner, rose nearly 4% after it reported a better-than-expected annual profit.
TPG Telecom was the worst performer after missing analysts’ expectations for sales and profit.
Inghams Group’s share price dropped sharply after the company reported a 57.9% decline in statutory net profit after tax to $35.1 million for the full year. Statutory EBITDA dropped 16.6% in the prior year to $370.4 million.
Oil prices are trading sideways today after a two-day rally on signs of improving U.S. demand but were still set for weekly losses on concerns over a Chinese slowdown and a potential Iran-led supply glut.
Dow has closed up 0.1%, S&P 500 up by 0.2%, and NASDAQ closed higher by 0.2%.
Hang Seng is down 0.11%, and FTSE 100 is up by 0.35%.
