ASX 200 Closed Higher; Lifted By Industrials And IT Sector
By the end of the trading session on 16 May 2022, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.25% and settled at 7093.00. 8 out of 11 sectors closed higher along with the ASX 200. The Industrials and Information Technology sectors are the top 2 gaining sectors, gained 2.42% and 2.14% in their index value. On the other hand, the Healthcare and Materials sectors are the top 2 losing sectors, declined 0.60% and 0.48% in their index values.
On Monday, S&P/ASX 200 gains capped at 0.25% as China’s retail sales and industrial growth data showed China's economy shrank in April. The materials and energy sector provided some support before lunchtime, but this caved after China reported that its economy cooled sharply in April, with COVID-19 lockdowns taking a heavier toll than predicted.
Brambles Limited (ASX: BXB) and Qube Holdings Limited (ASX: QUB) were the top gainers with 11.217% and 5.755% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Imugene Limited (ASX: IMU) and Zip Co Limited (ASX: PNV) were the top losers, with a 5.715% and 4.041% drop in the share price, respectively.
Brent crude slid 1.4% after the news that China's April retail sales plunged 11.1% on the year as strict lockdowns in Shanghai hurt economic activity, while Economic forecasters expected a decline of 5.9%.
Brambles gained more than 11% after the company responded to the media speculation and confirmed that it had a preliminary engagement with Capital Partners regarding an unsolicited proposal to acquire all of the shares in Brambles.
Dow has closed up by 1.5%, S&P 500 up by 2.4%, and NASDAQ closed higher by 3.8%.
Hang Seng is up by 0.10%, and FTSE 100 is up by 2.55%.
