Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX 200 Closed Higher by 0.37%; Led By Consumer Staples And Financials

By the end of the trading session on 25 May 2022, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.37% and settled at 7155.20. 7 out of 11 sectors closed higher along with the ASX 200. The Consumer Staples and Financials sectors were the top 2 gaining sectors, gained 1.54% and 0.81% in their index value. On the other hand, the Information Technology and Consumer Discretionary sectors were the top 2 losing sectors, declined 2.98% and 0.60% in their index values.

S&P/ASX 200 was mainly lifted by the Consumer Staples and Financials sector. But before lunchtime in Sydney, Gold miners also dominated the ASX 200 as the Gold prices increased to $1858.41 due to a weaker U.S. dollar and lower Treasury yields amid subdued risk appetite in financial markets, helping the material sector rise.

Costa Group Holdings Limited (ASX: CGC) and Nufarm Limited (ASX: NUF) were the top gainers with 8.591% and 5.611% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, BHP Group Limited (ASX: BHP) and Chalice Mining Limited (ASX: CHN) were the top losers, with a 10.000% and 6.597% drop in the share price, respectively.

  • Today, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand increased the Official Cash Rate to 2.0%. The Monetary Policy Committee also agreed to continue lifting the OCR to a level that will confidently bring consumer price inflation to within the target range.
  • Costa Group roses 8.59% following the company issued a trading update and forecast earnings to lift.
  • Brent Crude prices are rising by 0.70% as the investors weigh the supply tightness of gasoline against the possibility of economic slowdowns and continued lockdowns in China.
  • The Information Technology sector fell more than 2%, mirroring the renewed selling on the NASDAQ.
  • Dow has closed up by 0.2%, S&P 500 down by 0.8%, and NASDAQ closed down by 2.4%.
  • Hang Seng is up by 0.42%, and FTSE 100 is down by 0.39%.
