A countrywide investigation program found that 94% of new quad bikes evaluated by Australia’s consumer law regulators were compliant with the national safety standards that has been in power since October 2021. Unfortunately, there have been 180 deaths since 2011, which are connected with the use of quad bikes. The number of deaths has declined substantially from 2020 when there were 24 deaths due to quad bike incidents, to 11 in 2021 and 9 so far this year.
The ACCC operated with state and territory consumer protection and work health and safety agencies to conduct a 2nd annual round of surveillance activities, reviewing over 440 quad bike dealers in this process. Manufacturers and dealers were notified where slight non-compliance issues were found. The ACCC is inspecting with state and territory consumer protection agencies, a small number of cases where possibly serious non-compliance was recognized, comprising in relation to the safety of the operator protection devices.
