QBE Moderates Premium Hikes, Eyes Steady Growth

May 10, 2024

QBE Insurance Limited (ASX: QBE), a global insurer headquartered in Sydney, is implementing double-digit premium increases in Australia, albeit at a slower pace, marking the lowest rise in a year. Despite this, QBE remains optimistic about meeting disaster cost expectations. CEO Andrew Horton affirmed positive market support and expects mid-single-digit growth in gross written premium for 2024.

Premium rates in Australia rose by 11%, the lowest in four quarters, slightly below the previous corresponding period. Customer retention declined to 76%, partly due to deliberate business line shedding. Excluding crop insurance, group gross written premiums increased by 9% in the first quarter. Catastrophe costs, particularly from storms in Australia and North America, were in line with projections. QBE maintains a combined operating ratio of around 93.5% for the year and reports strong investment returns. Proxy advisers endorse board resolutions.
