On March 07 2023, Santos Limited (ASX: STO) has announced that it will work with TotalEnergies and ExxonMobil to start the front-end engineering and design (FEED) process for the Papua LNG project in Papua New Guinea. This project aims to have a capacity of up to six million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per annum, with the initial production scheduled for late 2027 or early 2028. After completing pre-FEED studies, the partners have chosen a concept for the development of the Papua LNG project.
The selected concept involves the utilization of four electric LNG trains (e-trains), each with a capacity of one million tonnes per annum. Papua LNG has obtained the right to use as much as two million tonnes of the current liquefaction capacity from PNG LNG, and the e-trains for the project will be built on the same site as the PNG LNG project. Compared to the previous concept, this chosen concept is expected to have lower capital expenditure.
