New Hope Corporation Limited (ASX: NHC), an Australian coal mining company, announced that Oakey Coal Action Alliance (OCAA) has launched a legal challenge against the company's New Acland Mine Stage 3 project. OCAA is contesting the Queensland government's decision to grant an Associated Water Licence in the Land Court and is seeking undertakings that New Acland Coal cease operations, including mining, pending the outcome of the appeal.
New Acland Coal has filed an application in the Land Court to amend certain conditions in the Associated Water Licence that are inconsistent with the terms of other approvals for the mine, including the Mining Lease for New Acland Stage 3. New Hope Group has announced plans to ramp up operations at the New Acland Mine while it assesses and responds to OCAA's new legal challenge. The project is expected to provide significant economic benefits for Queensland, including AU$1 billion for local workers, contractors, and businesses over the life of New Acland Stage 3.
