Silver Mines Limited (ASX: SVL) has announced that a local environmental group has initiated legal proceedings against the State Government's Independent Planning Commission (IPC) and Bowdens Silver Pty Ltd. The group is challenging the development consent for the Bowdens Silver Project, which was approved by the IPC in April 2023. The company emphasizes that the project underwent a comprehensive assessment process involving various government departments, independent peer reviews, and extensive community and stakeholder consultations.
The IPC approved the project after a thorough public hearing process. The legal proceedings do not contest the environmental or operational impacts of the project but focus solely on whether the IPC adequately considered issues related to the location and construction of a powerline for the mine site. As a State Significant Development, the project has limited appeal rights for third parties. Silver Mines Limited is currently working with legal advisors to evaluate and respond to the proceedings, with the intention to defend its position.
