ACCC grants interim authorization for Qantas and Jetstar Airways joint ventures

Qantas and Jetstar Airways have received interim authorization from the ACCC to continue coordinating their Jetstar Asian-based joint ventures, as well as for some coordination between Jetstar Japan and Japan Airlines. The airlines have requested continued collaboration with each other and Jetstar joint ventures Jetstar Asia and Jetstar Japan, with Jetstar seeking coordination with shareholding airlines Qantas and Japan Airlines for passenger and cargo services in Asia under certain circumstances.

While the ACCC has previously authorized this coordination in 2013 and 2018, the draft determination proposes granting final authorization for only five years instead of the requested 10, with submissions on the proposal open until March 17, 2023. The proposed re-authorization does not permit coordination between Qantas and Japan Airlines. The ACCC considers the collaboration to benefit consumers by offering a greater range of products, improved services, and more convenient flight times, with minimal competition reduction.
