ASX/200 Closed Lower by 1.66%, Dragged down by Healthcare

By the end of the trading session on 22 October 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed lower by 1.66% and settled at 8,205.70. All of the 11 sectors ended lower along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Healthcare and A-REIT  are the top-losing sectors, losing 2.43% and 2.25% in their index value.

Stanmore Resources Limited (ASX: SMR) and Corporate Travel Management Limited (ASX: CTD) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 3.436% and 3.035% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Polynovo Limited  (ASX: PNV) and Viva Energy Group Limited  (ASX: VEA) went down by 8.404% and 6.667% respectively are the top-losing stocks.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • WiseTech Global rebounded by 2.8% to close at $107.62, recovering from earlier losses. The stock had dropped nearly 15% on Monday after it was revealed that billionaire founder Richard White was selling shares to pay his ex-wife, contradicting prior explanations for the sell-off.
  • Transurban declined by 1.6%, closing at $13.05, despite reaffirming its FY25 distribution guidance of 65¢ per share. The toll roads operator also reported daily traffic growth in all markets except Melbourne.
  • Viva Energy saw a 6.7% decline to $2.66 following its warning of weaker retail conditions, coupled with lower tobacco sales and rising business costs.
  • Audinate Group dropped 6.1% to $8.96 after the company warned investors that it would likely miss its full-year gross profit target, citing ongoing challenges expected to persist into Q2.
  • Oil prices surged after an over 8% drop last week, as China introduced economic stimulus measures, and concerns grew regarding potential supply risks due to tensions in the Middle East.
  • Stock market performance: The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 0.80%, the S&P 500 dropped 0.18%, while the NASDAQ saw a slight rise of 0.27%.
  • International markets: The Hang Seng Index dropped by 1.57%, and the FTSE 100 declined by 0.48%.
