ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.42%, Dragged down by A-REIT

By the end of the trading session on 02 July 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.42% and settled at 7,718.20.  Out of 11 sectors, 10 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

Energy is the top-gaining sectors, gaining 2.00% in their index value. A-REIT and Consumer Discretionary were the top-losing sectors, losing 1.46% and 0.92% respectively in their index values.

Liontown Resources Limited (ASX: LTR) and Whitehaven Coal Limited (ASX: WHC) were the top-gaining stocks, gaining 7.303% and 5.658% in their stock prices. On the other hand, The Star Entertainment Group Limited (ASX: SGR) and IGO Limited (ASX: IGO) went down by 4.041% and 3.761% respectively are the top-losing stocks.

  • The stock market experienced its second consecutive loss of the new financial year on Tuesday, primarily due to ongoing concerns about interest rates, despite gains in oil and coal producers.
  • The RBA minutes revealed concerns about inflation risks and a strong commitment to returning inflation to target levels, even before the May CPI data.
  • Liontown Resources, a lithium developer, was the top performer on the ASX, rising 7.3% to 95.5¢ after securing a AU$250 million funding deal with South Korean battery giant LG Energy Solutions.
  • Bendigo and Adelaide Bank saw a 1% decline to AU$11.31 following the announcement that CEO Marnie Baker would step down after 35 years with the company.
  • ASX telco Superloop increased by 1.3% to AU$1.57, forecasting it would reach the upper end of its full-year earnings guidance.
  • Oil climbed to the highest in more than two months as traders took stock of mounting geopolitical risks in Europe and the Middle East as well as a hurricane in the Caribbean.
  • The Dow has closed up by 0.13%, the S&P 500 closed up by 0.27%, and the NASDAQ ended higher by 0.81%.
  • Hang Seng is up 0.01%, and FTSE 100 is up by 0.03%.
