ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.32%, Dragged down by Consumer Discretionary

By the end of the trading session on 21 February 2025, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed lower by 0.32% and settled at 8,296.20. Out of 11 sectors, 06 ended lower along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Materials and A-REIT are the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.56% and 0.53% % in their index value. On the other hand, Consumer Discretionary and Telecommunication Services is the top-losing sector, losing 1.54% and 1.29% in their index value.

Nine Entertainment Co. Holdings Limited (ASX: NEC) and Telix Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: TLX) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 20.138% and 13.823% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Guzman Y Gomez Limited (ASX: GYG) and REA Group Limited (ASX: REA) went down by 14.248% and 11.358% respectively are the top-losing stocks.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Guzman y Gomez shares dropped 9.4% after reporting half-year underlying earnings of $26.8 million, which fell short of market expectations. Despite this, the food retailer remains optimistic about exceeding its full-year profit forecasts for 2025, driven by strong first-half sales.
  • Newmont Corporation declined 1.6%, even as its 2024 earnings increased due to higher gold prices and sales volumes. However, the gold miner projected 2025 gold production at 5.9 million ounces, indicating a year-over-year decline.
  • Spark New Zealand saw a significant 18.6% slump after lowering its 2025 earnings guidance, citing weak performance in its enterprise and government division.
  • Yancoal climbed 3.7% after setting its 2025 production guidance between 35 million and 39 million tonnes. However, the company cautioned that first-quarter output would be lower due to mine plan sequencing.
  • Jumbo dropped 11.9% following a decline in first-half earnings, which it attributed to fewer large jackpots. The company also cut its dividend to 24¢, down 11.1%.
  • Global markets displayed mixed trends, with the Dow Jones rising 0.16%, the S&P 500 gaining 0.24%, and the NASDAQ edging up 0.07%.
  • The Hang Seng Index surged 3.35%, while the FTSE 100 fell 0.57%.
