ASX/200 Closed Higher by 1.10%, Lifted by Information Technology

By the end of the trading session on 12 September 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 1.10% and settled at 8,075.70. All 11 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Information Technology and Energy are the top- gaining sectors, gaining 2.44% and 2.32% in their index value.

Deep Yellow Limited (ASX: DYL) and Boss Energy Limited (ASX: BOE) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 13.526% and 10.728% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Spark New Zealand Limited (ASX: SPK) and Nine Entertainment Limited (ASX: NEC) went down by 2.813% and 2.812% respectively are the top-losing stocks.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Despite a broad rally across all 11 sectors, mining stocks stood out, with BHP being the exception, falling 1.4% to $38.81 as it traded without the right to its upcoming dividend.
  • WiseTech, a software company, hit a new record high, with its shares rising 3.5% to $131.64, bringing its year-to-date gains to 75%.
  • Nine Entertainment led the decliners, dropping 2.8% to $1.21 following CEO Mike Sneesby's resignation and the stock trading ex-dividend. Brickworks also saw a significant drop due to a projected $123.5 million loss for fiscal 2024, driven by declining building markets and higher operational costs.
  • The Australian dollar gained 0.3%, reaching US66.75¢, while government bond yields dropped, with the three-year yield hitting a six-week low at 3.46%, and the 10-year yield falling to 3.87%.
  • Global Market Indices: The Dow closed down 0.31%, the S&P 500 fell 1.07%, while the NASDAQ rose 2.17%. 
  • The Hang Seng dropped 0.73%, and the FTSE 100 decreased by 0.15%.
