ASX/200 Closed Higher by 0.70%, Lifted by Energy

By the end of the trading session on 30 September 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.70% and settled at 8,269.80. Out of 11 sectors, 08 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Energy and Materials are the top- gaining sectors, gaining 2.61% and 1.76% in their index value. Whereas, Telecommunications Services and Consumer Staples are the top-losing sectors, losing 0.33% and 0.21% in their index value.

The Star Entertainment Limited (ASX: SGR) and Karoon Energy Limited (ASX: KAR) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 18.000% and 7.191% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Deep Yellow Limited  (ASX: DYL) and Genesis Mineral Limited (ASX: GMD) went down by 4.514% and 4.186% respectively are the top-losing stocks.

  • Star Entertainment Group rebounded by 18% to 29.5¢, making it the top performer on the index after suffering a 44% drop in its share price on Friday, marking the worst crash in its history.

  • Liontown Resources saw a 3.2% rise following the completion of its first shipment of spodumene concentrate to China and the initiation of spot sales from its Kathleen Valley project in Western Australia.
  • Synlait Milk from New Zealand surged 7%, despite reporting a significant net loss for fiscal 2024.
  • November iron ore futures in Singapore exceeded $US110 per tonne, reaching their highest level since July.
  • The Australian dollar increased to US69.41¢, its highest since February 2023, driven by rising iron prices and China’s demand for commodities.
  • In the US, the Dow Jones rose by 0.62%, the S&P 500 by 0.40%, and the NASDAQ closed higher by 0.58%.
  • Hang Seng advanced by 4.16%, while the FTSE 100 climbed by 0.20%.
