ASX/200 Closed Higher by 0.22%, Lifted by Financials

By the end of the trading session on 02 September 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.22% and settled at 8,109.90. Out of 11 Sectors, 07 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Financial and Energy are the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.14% and 1.10% in their index value. Materials and Telecommunications Services are the top-losing sectors, losing 1.11% and 0.90% in their index value.

Smartgroup Corporation Limited (ASX: SIQ) and Healius Limited (ASX: HLS) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 5.368% and 4.790% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Belleuve Gold Limited (ASX: BGL) and Red 5 Limited (ASX: RED) went down by 9.091% and 7.353% respectively are the top-losing stocks.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Bellevue Gold reported its first full-year profit after initiating production at its Western Australia mining project earlier this year. However, its shares dropped by 9.1% to $1.15, in line with declines seen across other gold mining stocks.

  • Coast Entertainment, the operator of Dreamworld, saw its shares decline by 1.9% to 52¢ following an incident where a handler was mauled at the Queensland theme park.
  • Imugene shares surged 9.7% to 6.8¢ after the company released what it described as "promising results" from a trial involving 10 patients receiving its cancer treatment.
  • Oil prices decreased as signs emerged that OPEC+ might move forward with a plan to increase output starting in October, amid growing economic challenges in China.
  • The Dow Jones closed up by 0.55%, the S&P 500 increased by 1.01%, and the NASDAQ rose by 1.13%.
  • The Hang Seng index rose by 1.14%, while the FTSE 100 experienced a slight dip of 0.04%.
