ASX/200 Closed Higher by 0.09%, Lifted by A-REIT

By the end of the trading session on 03 October 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.09% and settled at 8,203.20. Out of 11 sectors, 05 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.

A-REIT and Telecommunications Services are the top- gaining sectors, gaining 1.67% and 0.35% in their index value. Whereas,  Utilties and Consumer Discretionary are the top-losing sectors, losing 0.41% and 0.35% in their index value.

Sigma Healthcare Limited (ASX: SIG) and Deep Yellow Limited (ASX: DYL) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 8.136% and 3.367% in their stock prices. On the other hand, New Hope Corporation Limited  (ASX: NHC) and The Star Entertainment Limited (ASX: SGR) went down by 5.556% and 5.455% respectively are the top-losing stocks.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Pilbara Minerals (ASX: PLS) experienced a 4.8% drop to $3.11 after reports from The Australian Financial Review’s Street Talk indicated that block trades in the $9.96 billion lithium company were being handled by the equities teams at Morgan Stanley and Bank of America.
  • Westpac (ASX: WBC) shares fell by 1.3%, closing at $30.71. The bank is set to generate around $1.5 billion from selling its auto finance loan portfolio to non-bank lender Resimac Group (ASX: RMC), which is listed on the ASX.
  • Sigma Healthcare (ASX: SIG) surged by 8.1%, reaching $2.06. According to Bloomberg data, two block trades totaling around $27 million were exchanged.
  • Australia’s IPO market is facing its weakest performance in 15 years, with companies opting for private capital over public listings to avoid the scrutiny that comes with going public and to maintain protected valuations.
  • Oil prices increased for the third consecutive day, as traders weighed potential supply disruptions in the Middle East. Israel is expected to respond to Iran following Tehran’s missile attacks earlier in the week.
  • The Dow Jones closed up by 0.09%, the S&P 500 gained 0.01%, and the NASDAQ rose 0.08%. 
  • Meanwhile, the Hang Seng fell 1.06%, and the FTSE 100 increased by 0.17%.
