ASX/200 Closed Higher by 0.06%, Lifted by Materials

By the end of the trading session on 13 February 2025, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.06% and settled at 8,540.00. Out of 11 sectors, 03 ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Materials and Consumer Discretionary are the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.52% and 0.88% % in their index value. On the other hand, Utilities and Consumer Staples is the top-losing sector, losing 2.36% and 0.97% in their index value.

Liontown Resources Limited (ASX: LTR) and Mineral Resources Limited (ASX: MIN) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 9.243% and 6.970% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Insurance Australia Group  Limited (ASX: IAG) and AGL Energy Limited (ASX: AGL) went down by 12.557% and 6.565% respectively are the top-losing stocks.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Temple & Webster (ASX: TPW) surged 13% to $16.14 after reaching an all-time high earlier in the session. The online furniture retailer exceeded market expectations with a nearly 24% increase in sales, driven by strong demand from both new and returning customers.
  • Meanwhile, former REA Group (ASX: REA) CEO Greg Ellis has been appointed interim CEO of Domain (ASX: DHG) for up to a year as the company, controlled by Nine Entertainment (ASX: NEC), continues its search for a permanent leader. Domain’s shares jumped 7% to $2.92 following the announcement.
  • Downer EDI (ASX: DOW) declined 3.6% to $5.35 after reporting a 6.5% drop in revenue. The company’s earnings were impacted by a series of one-off costs.
  • Pro Medicus (ASX: PME) also saw a decline, falling 3.2% to $279.08 after its first-half earnings came in below market forecasts.
  • Oil prices continued to decline after former U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he had spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin, raising hopes of reduced geopolitical risks affecting crude supply.
  • In global markets, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.50%, the S&P 500 dropped 0.27%, while the NASDAQ inched up 0.03%. 
  • Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose 0.59%, and the FTSE 100 gained 0.34%.
