ASX 200 Ended Lower By 0.40%; Weighed Down By Materials And Consumer Staples Sectors

By the end of the trading session on 23 February 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.40% and settled at 7,285.40. Out of 11 sectors, 6 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

The Utilities and Health Care sectors were the top gaining sectors, gained 1.17% and 1.11% respectively in their index values. The Materials and Consumer Staples Sectors were the top 2 declining sectors, declined 1.56% and 0.87% respectively in their index values.

Eagers Automotive Limited (ASX: APE) and Qube Holdings Limited (ASX: QUB) were the top gainers, with 8.969% and 8.695% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, BEGA Cheese Limited (ASX: BGA) and Qantas Airway Limited (ASX: QAN) were the top losers, with -7.778% and -6.801% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • S&P/ASX 200 declined today as the minutes from the Federal Reserve’s February meeting added to anticipations that more rate hikes are in the line to squeeze inflation.
  • Blackmores experienced a decline in shares by 6.6% to AU$79.08 by the end of trading session on the ASX due to a less-than-stellar first half profit. The company achieved a net profit after tax of AU$25.5 million for the six months ended December 31, which was 1.4% lower compared to the same period in the previous year.
  • Star Entertainment Group recorded a significant loss of AU$1.26 billion due to a substantial write down of its Sydney casino's goodwill, prompting the company to implement an AU$800 million capital raising.
  • Despite fears of rising interest rates, oil prices went up today, following reports suggesting that Russia's supply cuts will be more extensive than previously announced. However, markets experienced substantial losses for the week.
  • The Dow declined by 0.26%, the S&P 500 dropped by 0.16%, while NASDAQ ended higher by 0.13%. 
  • Hang Seng is down by 0.20%, and the FTSE 100 decreased by -0.59%.
