The March 2023 quarterly report highlights a 7% increase in the South32 Limited’s (ASX: S32) copper equivalent production year-to-date, driven by recent investments in copper and low-carbon aluminum. Record production was achieved by Australia Manganese, while improved market conditions led to higher prices for premium hard coking coal and manganese products. However, adverse weather and temporary impacts led to below-plan group production for the quarter.
Aluminum production increased by 15% year-to-date, with Hillside Aluminium testing its technical capacity, and Mozal Aluminium and Brazil Aluminium ramping up production. Following a fatal incident and local flooding, Mozal Aluminium output was reduced to enable a safe recovery plan, leading to an 8% reduction in FY23 production guidance. Cerro Matoso nickel production was largely unchanged, with FY23 production guidance revised down by 7%. The report also covers the production updates for Sierra Gorda, Cannington, Illawarra Metallurgical Coal, and South Africa Manganese.
