BHP Group Limited (ASX: BHP) has released its operational review for the nine months ending March 31, 2023. The report notes a tragic incident that occurred in February when Jody Byrne was fatally injured in a rail incident in the Port Hedland operations. Production guidance remains unchanged for iron ore, metallurgical coal, and energy coal. BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) is expected to be at the bottom of its range, while Olympic Dam and Pampa Norte are expected to be toward the upper end of their guidance ranges.
Escondida's production guidance has been lowered, but total copper production guidance remains unchanged at between 1,635 and 1,825 kt. Full-year nickel production has also been lowered. WAIO achieved record production, and no significant damage or injuries were reported during Tropical Cyclone Ilsa. Unit cost guidance remains unchanged, and the acquisition of OZ Minerals Ltd was approved. The South Australian government granted environmental approval for the next phase of exploration drilling at Oak Dam, and BHP identified a new copper porphyry mineralized system in Arizona, United States, called Ocelot.
