On February 15th, 2023, ASIC declared its intentions to expand its enforcement focus areas in the upcoming year, with a particular emphasis on protecting consumers from financial harm. The regulator has identified greenwashing, predatory lending, and misleading insurance pricing promises as key areas of focus for the year.
The announcement coincides with the publication of ASIC's latest enforcement and regulatory report, which highlights the agency's recent activities and outlines its priorities for the coming year (REP 757). According to ASIC Deputy Chair Sarah Court, the agency's recent enforcement actions demonstrate its ongoing commitment to addressing misconduct, market integrity threats, and consumer harms across a range of sectors, including financial services, retail, and crypto-assets.
These actions have targeted issues such as corporate governance and directors' duties, product design and distribution, and misleading statements regarding sustainable finance practices.
