AGL Energy Limited announced the closure of its Torrens Island B Power Station

Nov 24, 2022

AGL Energy Limited (ASX:AGL) announced the closure of the Torrens Island B Power Station on 30 June 2026, and it will continue to work on transforming its Torrens Island site into a low-carbon industrial Energy Hub. This has been decided after careful consideration and broad consultation with stakeholders comprising the South Australian Government.

This announcement is not estimated to have a substantial effect on underlying profit in FY23 or over the longer term due to the challenged economic viability of the power station. The Torrens Island ‘B’ Power Station started functioning in 1976 with a nameplate capacity of 800 MW, providing South Australia with both electricity generation and grid ancillary services. The first of the four generating units was suspended in October 2021, and both B1 and the rest 3 units will be closed on 30 June 2026.
