The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has launched its Digital Platform Services Inquiry, which will investigate the expanding ecosystems of digital platform service providers operating in Australia over a five-year period. The inquiry will examine the investment decisions made by major players such as Alphabet (Google), Amazon, Apple, Meta (Facebook) and Microsoft, who continue to invest heavily across different sectors and technologies, leading to a web of interconnected products and services. An issues paper was released, inviting submissions from consumers, businesses, and other stakeholders about the potential impacts on competition and consumers.
The interim report will investigate the products and services offered by digital platform service providers across various sectors, with examples including the expansion into consumer cloud storage and smart home devices, to analyze the relationships between different digital platform services and the various services they offer in their ecosystems.
