ACCC Imposes Price Controls for Superfast Fixed-Line Broadband Networks

The ACCC has issued a final wholesale access determination for superfast broadband access services (SBAS), impacting networks like those of TPG and Uniti Group Limited. Covering over a million premises, these networks are often the sole providers in many areas. The determination sets maximum wholesale prices, ensuring stability and competition.

Prices are benchmarked against NBN Co's, enabling consistent offerings across networks. Regulated monthly prices for popular speed tiers will offer certainty to retailers. The move is expected to lower wholesale costs for entry-level and popular services, while regulating connection charges to ease switching between retailers. ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey states the decision balances consumer interests and network investment. Effective from September 1, 2024, until March 1, 2027, the determination follows extensive consultation with industry stakeholders.
