%Mid-Market: S&P/ASX 200 Trading Lower; Energy Stocks Dragged The Market Into Red

On 06 March 2025, at AEDT 12:30 PM, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 is trading lower today, declining 39.70 points or 0.49%, and is currently trading at 8,101.40 levels. Out of 11, 9 sectors are trading lower along with the decline in the S&P/ASX 200.

The Materials and Consumer Staples sectors are the top 2 gaining sectors, gaining 0.34% and 0.10% in their index values. On the other hand, Energy and Healthcare sectors are the top 2 declining sectors, declining 2.21% and 1.21% in their index values.

Johns Lying Group Limited (ASX: JLG) and Sandfire Resources Limited (ASX: SFR) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 8.527% and 6.750% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Smartgroup Corporation Ltd (ASX: SIQ) and Woodside Energy Limited (ASX: WDS) are the top-losing stocks and are declining by 4.390% and 4.271% in their stock prices.

Factors influencing the market-

  • Australian share market is trading lower, as energy stocks dragged the share market into the red today, after concerns around US tariffs imposed on crude oil imports sent prices tumbling to a three-year low.
  • Amcor PLC’ shares fell ~1% after it unveiled plans to reorganise its business following its $13 billion merger with Berry and said it was on the hunt for several new members of its executive team, hinting it may appoint a new CFO.
  • Silver prices climbed to a one-week high as concerns about a global trade war fanned haven demand and the dollar weakened.
  • Oil prices settled down for the fourth consecutive session on Wednesday after U.S. crude oil stockpiles posted a larger-than-expected build, adding a further headwind as investors worried about OPEC+ plans to increase output in April and U.S. tariffs on Canada, China and Mexico.
  • The Dow has closed up by 1.14%, the S&P 500 closed up by 1.11%, and the NASDAQ ended higher by 1.46%.
  • Hang Seng is up by 2.84%, and FTSE 100 is trading flat.
