Westpac Shares Surge Despite Quarterly Challenges

Feb 19, 2024

Highlights:

  • Investors in the ASX 200 have witnessed a remarkable surge in Westpac Banking Corp (ASX: WBC) shares today, outpacing its S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) counterparts.
  • The bank's quarterly results have drawn significant attention, revealing both challenges and potential opportunities that have influenced investor sentiment.

Positive Momentum:

While other major ASX 200 bank stocks experience fluctuations, Westpac shares are soaring, marking a 2.4% increase to AU$25.17 a share in early afternoon trading. In contrast, Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd (ASX: ANZ) shares are down 0.1%, National Australia Bank Ltd (ASX: NAB) shares are down 0.4%, and Commonwealth Bank of Australia (ASX: CBA) shares are up 0.6%.

Drivers Behind Westpac's Performance:

Investor optimism surrounding Westpac stems from the bank's quarterly update. Despite a slip in net

interest margin (NIM) and profits below consensus expectations, the market response has been unexpectedly positive. Core NIM decreased by 0.04% to 1.80%, while net profit witnessed a 6% decline to AU$1.5 billion. However, these challenges were anticipated, with management previously signaling inflationary pressures and competition within the mortgage markets.

Future Outlook:

Despite short-term setbacks, Westpac's outlook remains promising. Excluding exceptional items, quarterly net profit remained steady at AU$1.8 billion, in line with the second half of 2023. Management remains optimistic, highlighting that profit headwinds are temporary, particularly related to hedge accounting. Moreover, with only 31% of the bank's AU$1.5 billion on-market share buyback completed, further support for share prices is anticipated.

Challenges Ahead:

Nevertheless, challenges persist, with high interest rates and inflation impacting both households and the bank's loan portfolios. Westpac reported credit impairment provisions of AU$5.1 billion at the end of 2023, exceeding expected losses by AU$1.5 billion. Despite these challenges, investor confidence in Westpac's resilience remains unwavering.

Conclusion:

Westpac's resilience amid quarterly challenges underscores its strategic positioning within the ASX 200. While short-term headwinds persist, the bank's proactive measures and optimistic outlook offer investors a glimmer of hope in navigating the uncertain economic landscape.
