Telstras Strategic Move: Acquisition of Cloud Leader Versent

Oct 11, 2023

Telecommunications giant Telstra Group Limited (ASX: TLS) has announced its intention to acquire Versent, a renowned technology consultancy firm, for a significant sum of AU$267.5 million. The move is set to bolster Telstra's Telstra Purple tech services business, drive NAS (Network as a Service) growth, and further support the ongoing digitization of businesses and industries across Australia.

Versent's Impressive Performance

Versent has reported a remarkable AU$130 million in net revenue during FY23, demonstrating a robust 17 percent Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) between FY20 and FY23. The company's team, comprising over 500 experts, collaborates with more than 40 percent of ASX 100 companies, assisting them in leveraging cloud technology. Versent offers both professional and managed services and holds key partnerships with industry giants like AWS, Microsoft, and leading security and data vendors.

Versent's Unique Expertise

Versent's reputation in the tech industry is built on its award-winning AWS services capability and deep-domain expertise in areas such as cloud, security, data, digital transformation, and identity and access management. The company, headquartered in Melbourne, is currently under a mixed ownership structure involving its founders, investors, and employees.

Expansion Beyond Cloud Expertise

The acquisition also encompasses Stax, a subsidiary of Versent, known for its self-serve cloud management platform, catering to enterprise and mid-market customers. Stax empowers businesses to design, build, and operate their own cloud infrastructure.

Telstra's Growth Strategy

David Burns, Group Executive of Telstra Enterprise, explained that the acquisition of Versent aligns with Telstra's T25 growth strategy, aimed at supporting the digital ambitions of Australia's leading industries. Telstra Purple, Telstra's technology services business, has witnessed a surge in demand for technology solutions, particularly in cybersecurity and cloud-driven transformations.

Synergy and International Expansion

Burns emphasized the strong alignment between Telstra and Versent, both in terms of customer base, strategic partnerships, and corporate culture. Versent's international presence, particularly in Southeast Asia, presents exciting growth prospects for Telstra, enhancing its ability to deliver international and Australia-focused digital transformation services.

Strategic Expansion for Telstra

This acquisition follows Telstra's recent purchases of Alliance Automation and Aqura Technologies, reinforcing Telstra Purple's capabilities to cater to the end-to-end needs of various industry verticals and accelerate NAS growth.

Conclusion and Timeline

The completion of the acquisition is anticipated within the next six weeks, subject to the fulfillment of specific conditions, including certain securityholder processes. Telstra's strategic move to acquire Versent reflects its commitment to enhancing its technology services and becoming a holistic technology partner for its diverse customer base.
