  • Australia's population grew by 1.9 percent in 2022, reaching 26.3 million people.
  • This growth rate is the highest since 2008.
  • Overseas migration contributed significantly to population growth, with 387,000 people added through net overseas migration.
  • The recovery of international student arrivals drove the surge in net overseas migration.
  • Departures were lower than usual due to fewer students arriving during the pandemic.
  • Natural increase, which includes births minus deaths, saw a decrease of 23.4 percent compared to the previous year.
  • There were 300,700 births and 190,900 deaths registered in 2022.
  • COVID-19 mortality played a significant role in the increased number of deaths and the lower natural increase.
