Liontown Resources Kathleen Valley Lithium Project Faces Funding Challenge

Sep 29, 2023

Liontown Resources (ASX: LTR) has effectively managed cost control for its Kathleen Valley lithium project despite facing challenges. Capital costs for the project increased by 6% to AU$951 million, but operational costs per tonne remained in check. The project remains on schedule despite concerns raised by Gina Rinehart. However, Liontown has delayed plans to generate early cash flow due to soft lithium prices.

Takeover Bid and Funding Gap

The situation is further complicated by Albemarle's AU$6.6 billion takeover bid for Liontown. Hancock Prospecting, owned by Gina Rinehart, has taken a significant stake in Liontown, raising questions about the project's feasibility. Liontown is currently in talks with banks and government agencies to secure more than AU$450 million in additional funding within the next three months to meet production goals by mid-2024.

Optimism Amid Challenges

Liontown remains optimistic about the project's success, defending higher cost estimates and expressing confidence in underground mining contractor Byrnecut. The company forecasts operating costs of AU$73 per tonne in mining and AU$651 per tonne in producing spodumene concentrate.

Market Dynamics and Future Plans

Despite short-term market fluctuations, Liontown believes lithium demand will continue to grow, justifying its long-term strategy. The company has binding offtake agreements with LG Chem, Tesla, and Ford, accounting for 90% of the spodumene concentrate Kathleen Valley is set to produce from mid-2024.

Moving Forward

Liontown is considering advancing its plans to reach a 4 million tonnes per year ore processing rate by 2027, which could involve additional sales or downstream lithium hydroxide processing. The company's confidence in this expansion is based on the performance of underground mining operations similar to those required at Kathleen Valley.

As Liontown Resources strives to secure the necessary funding and maintain project momentum, the outcome of Albemarle's takeover bid and Hancock Prospecting's involvement will continue to shape the future of the Kathleen Valley lithium project.
