  • Significant price increases in Housing (+5.2%), Food and non-alcoholic beverages (+3.3%), Transport (+4.9%), and Alcohol and tobacco (+6.7%).

Monthly Overview

The latest CPI data released for May 2024 indicates a significant rise in inflation, with an annual increase of 4.0%, up from 3.6% in April. This increase underscores the growing financial pressures on Australian households as costs continue to climb across essential categories.

Housing and Rents

  • Housing costs surged by 5.2%, driven by increased prices for new dwellings and higher rents.
  • Rental prices jumped by 7.4% annually, reflecting strong demand amid tight rental markets.
  • New dwelling prices maintained steady growth at 4.9%, consistent over the past ten months.

Energy Costs

  • Electricity prices soared by 6.5% over the year, up from a 4.2% increase in April. This rise is attributed to the gradual unwinding of the Energy Bill Relief Fund rebates.
  • Without these rebates, electricity prices would have seen a staggering 14.5% increase.

Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages

  • This category saw a 3.3% increase, down from a 3.8% rise in April, indicating a slight easing.
  • Notable price rises were observed in fruit and vegetables (+4.4%), driven by higher costs for grapes, strawberries, blueberries, tomatoes, and capsicums.
  • Conversely, meat and seafood prices fell by 0.6%, with lamb and goat prices dropping significantly.

Automotive Fuel

  • Automotive fuel prices experienced a substantial rise of 9.3% in the 12 months to May, up from 7.4% in April, driven by higher wholesale fuel prices earlier in the year.
  • However, in monthly terms, fuel prices fell by 5.1% in May after three consecutive months of increases.

Insurance

  • Insurance prices rose sharply by 14.0% over the past year, slightly down from a record 16.5% increase in April. This rise is due to higher reinsurance costs, natural disaster impacts, and increased claims.

Holiday Travel and Accommodation

  • Prices for holiday travel and accommodation saw an annual increase of 2.9%, marking the first positive annual movement since October 2023.
  • In monthly terms, prices fell by 2.7%, primarily due to decreased demand following the end of the school holiday period.

The May 2024 CPI indicator highlights the ongoing inflationary pressures affecting Australian consumers. The significant rise in costs across various sectors is a growing concern, impacting the overall cost of living and household budgets nationwide. As inflation continues to climb, the economic landscape remains challenging, with consumers and policymakers closely monitoring these trends.
