Fiona Hick Joins Evolution Mining Board

Evolution Mining Limited (ASX: EVN) has welcomed Fiona Hick to its board, marking her first major career move since departing Fortescue Metals Group (ASX: FMG) after a brief tenure as chief executive of its iron ore division. Hick's departure from Fortescue came in August 2023, shortly after the company’s full-year results were announced.

New Role and Responsibilities

At Evolution Mining, Hick will serve on the board and be a member of the Risk and Sustainability Committee. She is also expected to join the board of another ASX-listed company soon. Hick's extensive experience in the resources industry, including senior roles at Rio Tinto and Woodside Energy, makes her a valuable addition to Evolution Mining’s leadership.

Background and Experience

With a 29-year career in the resources sector, Hick has held significant positions, including president of the West Australian Chamber of Minerals and Energy from 2021 to 2023, where she advocated for addressing sexual assault and harassment issues in the industry. At Woodside Energy, she held leadership roles in health, safety, environment, strategy, planning, and engineering, culminating in her position as executive vice president of Australian operations before joining Fortescue.

Departure from Fortescue

Hick’s exit from Fortescue was described as “friendly and mutual” by executive chairman Andrew Forrest. However, Forrest later suggested that Hick did not fully align with his vision of transitioning the company towards green energy, leading to her departure. Hick’s exit marked the tenth senior executive departure from Fortescue within three years.

Future Prospects

Jake Klein, executive chairman of Evolution Mining, expressed confidence in Hick’s appointment, noting her depth of experience and the positive impact she will have on the board. Hick has already visited Evolution’s Cowal and Northparkes mines, reinforcing her positive outlook on the company’s people and assets. Evolution acquired a majority stake in the Northparkes copper and gold mine in Central Western NSW for AU$720 million last year.

Market Reaction

Following the announcement of Hick’s board appointment, Evolution Mining’s shares fell slightly, trading at AU$3.44, down 6.5 cents. Hick's transition to Evolution Mining signals a new chapter in her career, bringing her extensive expertise to one of Australia’s leading gold and copper producers.
