Consumer Price Index - January 2024 Reveals Mixed Trends

Feb 14, 2024

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released data showing a 0.3 percent increase in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) in January 2024, following a 0.2 percent rise in December. Over the past 12 months, the index rose by 3.1 percent before seasonal adjustment.

Food and Shelter Costs Surge

The index for shelter saw a notable increase of 0.6 percent, driving over two-thirds of the monthly increase in all items. Additionally, the food index rose by 0.4 percent, with both food at home and away from home contributing to the uptick.

Energy Prices Experience Decline

Conversely, the energy index decreased by 0.9 percent due largely to a decline in the gasoline index. The overall decrease in energy prices offset some of the inflationary pressures in other sectors.

Core Inflation Remains Steady

Excluding food and energy, the core CPI rose by 0.4 percent, with notable increases seen in shelter, motor vehicle insurance, and medical care. However, some sectors experienced declines, such as used

cars and trucks and apparel.

Yearly Comparison

Comparing yearly data, the all items index increased by 3.1 percent over the 12 months ending January, a slight decrease from the previous 3.4 percent increase. The energy index saw a notable decline of 4.6 percent over the same period, while the food index increased by 2.6 percent.

Impact on Consumers

The rising costs of shelter and food may strain consumer budgets, while the decline in energy prices could offer some relief. However, the overall increase in core inflation suggests ongoing economic challenges for households.

Methodology Changes for Used Cars and Trucks

The CPI program implemented changes in methodology for the used cars and trucks index, aiming for more accurate mileage adjustments and seasonal factors.

Looking Ahead

The next CPI release for February 2024 is scheduled for March 12, 2024. Analysts will closely monitor future reports for insights into inflationary trends and their implications for the economy.

Conclusion

The January 2024 CPI data reflects a mixed picture, with increases in shelter and food costs tempered by declines in energy prices. Methodological changes underscore efforts to enhance accuracy in tracking inflation, providing policymakers and consumers with more reliable economic indicators.
