Australias Unemployment Rate Edges Up to 3.8% in March

Apr 18, 2024

Highlights:

  • Slight Increase in Unemployment: Australia's unemployment rate rose slightly to 3.8% in March, with a modest decrease in employment and a rise in the number of unemployed individuals.
  • Stable Yet High Employment Metrics: Despite a small drop, the employment-to-population ratio and participation rate remain close to their November 2023 highs, indicating continued strength in the labor market.
  • Recovery in Hours Worked: Hours worked in March increased by 0.9%, showing a recovery in labor productivity despite the overall employment slowdown.

Labor Market Shifts

In March 2024, Australia witnessed a slight increase in its unemployment rate to 3.8%, up by 0.1 percentage point, according to the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). This rise was attributed to a decrease in employment by approximately 7,000 individuals and an increase in the number of unemployed persons by 21,000.

Employment Dynamics

Despite the small uptick in unemployment, the labor market conditions remained relatively strong. The employment-to-population ratio slightly declined by 0.2 percentage points to 64.0%, and the participation rate dipped to 66.6%. Bjorn Jarvis, Head of Labour Statistics at ABS, highlighted that both figures are still near record highs achieved in November 2023.

Working Hours and Productivity

Interestingly, the total hours worked in March increased by 0.9%. This marks a recovery over the past two months, leading to a yearly growth rate in hours worked of 1.7%. Although this growth in hours worked is slower compared to the 2.4% annual increase in employment, it reflects a stabilization from the unusually high levels recorded a year prior.

Underemployment and Utilization Rates

March also saw a slight decrease in the underemployment rate, falling by 0.1 percentage point to 6.5%. The overall labor underutilization rate, combining the rates of unemployment and underemployment, held steady at 10.3%. These figures suggest a continuing tightness in the labor market, albeit with some fluctuating metrics.

Outlook and Projections

The trend data for March continued to show stability in employment growth and hours worked. The employment-to-population ratio remains robust, hovering around historically high levels. As Australia's labor market dynamics evolve, the ABS plans to release more detailed regional labor market data and new, improved estimates in the upcoming reports, providing a clearer view of the employment landscape across the country.
